25 03 March Monthly Meeting - De-Escalation Strategies
Join us for an insightful presentation on
de-escalation strategies, led by a representative
from the Overland Park Police Department.

In a business of any sort, we have occasions to come across a variety of people. Facility Managers regularly interact with a wide range of individuals like tenants, employees, contractors, and visitors.
While most interactions are routine, some can become challenging or even escalate into safety concerns. Understanding ourselves, our personalities, responses and limits are helpful while we work with people.

This session will equip you with practical strategies for managing difficult encounters, including:
- Understanding your own responses, personality traits, and limits in high-stress situations
- Recognizing body language and non-verbal cues that signal potential conflict
- Positioning yourself for safety in escalating situations
- Knowing when and how to call for backup

When a difficult encounter is handled poorly, a simple disagreement can quickly escalate into a tense or even dangerous situation. However, with a basic understanding of de-escalation techniques, body language cues, and strategic positioning, we can defuse conflicts before they escalate—creating a safer and more controlled environment for everyone. Knowing how to assess situations, recognize behavioral cues, and respond effectively is crucial for maintaining a safe and professional environment.
Our discussion will be led by:
Wes Griffith, CPP, Overland Park Police Department
