When Function Meets Façade:
Restoring the Whittaker Courthouse

Join us this November as we welcome Sharon Clay, R.A., NCARB, FMP, SFP & Transition Consultant II with Gilbane, to walk us through the comprehensive façade glazing project at the GSA’s Charles Evans Whittaker U.S. Federal Courthouse.

This ambitious, multi-year project tackled complex goals while keeping a critical federal facility fully operational. Sharon will share her first-hand perspective on balancing design, security, and sustainability with the realities of a 600,000-square-foot, 11-story building occupied by more than 250 employees.

Program Highlights

  • Project Goals:

    • Replacing exterior storefront and curtain wall systems
    • Integrating energy-saving technologies
    • Implementing security upgrades
    • Designing bird-deterrent glazing with frit patterns

  • Project Challenges:

    • Maintaining continuous courthouse operations
    • Phased relocation and return of employees
    • Coordinating construction across multiple floors and departments

  • Project Scale:

    • 600,000 sq. ft. facility
    • 11 floors
    • 4-year duration
    • 250+ employees impacted

This program is an inside look at one of Kansas City’s most significant federal building upgrades — blending technical expertise, logistical coordination, and human-centered design.
